Questions
What is the difference between net and gross?
Net is the price before tax. Gross is the price with the tax added on. Gross is always net plus the tax amount.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by the rate written as a decimal, then add the result. At 20%, 100 × 1.2 = 120, so the tax is 20 and the gross price is 120.
How do I take VAT out of a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate written as a decimal. Removing 20% from 120 gives 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 net, and the tax is the difference, 20.
Is GST or sales tax worked out the same way?
The arithmetic is the same for any percentage tax added on top of a price. Which tax applies, which rate is right and how it is shown on an invoice depend on where you are, so check the official rules for your case.
