Questions
Should I tip on the total or before tax?
Either is common. Many people tip on the amount before tax, and others tip on the total. Pick the one your group agrees on.
How is each share worked out?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A bill of 120 with a 15% tip comes to 138, and split four ways that is 34.50 each.
What does rounding up leave behind?
Rounding each share up to a whole number collects a little more than the total, and the difference is extra tip. 34.50 rounded up to 35 each collects 140, which leaves 2 as extra tip.
Can it split between any number of people?
Yes, from 1 upwards. The total is divided evenly, so shares are not weighted by what each person ordered.
