Questions

How do I work out a sale price?

Multiply the price by 1 minus the discount written as a decimal. 80 with 20% off is 80 × 0.80 = 64.

Is 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The second discount is taken from the reduced price. 80 × 0.80 = 64, then 64 × 0.90 = 57.60, which is 28% off the original 80.

Is sales tax worked out before or after the discount?

This calculator adds the tax to the sale price, after the discount. Rules differ by place and by how a seller records the discount, so check the receipt for the final figure.

How do I find the percentage off from two prices?

Take the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. From 100 to 80 is (100 − 80) ÷ 100 × 100 = 20% off.
