Questions
Will my photos be uploaded?
No. The compression runs in your browser with the canvas API. Your photos never leave your device, which is also why it is fast.
How does it hit an exact size?
It tries different quality levels (a binary search) until the file is just under your target. If even low quality is too big, it also reduces the pixel dimensions a little at a time.
Why did my PNG turn into a JPG or WebP?
PNG is lossless, so it cannot be squeezed to a target size. Photos are re-encoded as JPEG; images with transparency become WebP so the transparent areas survive.
Is the location data removed?
Yes. Re-encoding through the canvas drops EXIF metadata, including GPS location and camera details.
