Questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Both compare profit, but to different numbers. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. A product that costs 10 and sells for 15 makes 5 profit: a 33.3% margin and a 50% markup.
How do I find the price for a target margin?
Divide the cost by one minus the margin. For a 40% margin on a cost of 30, the price is 30 ÷ 0.6 = 50.
Why can’t the margin reach 100%?
Margin is profit divided by price, and profit is always less than the price unless the cost is zero. A 100% markup, on the other hand, just means charging double the cost.
