Input

Text is hashed as UTF-8. Line breaks count as typed.

    How to generate a hash

    1. Type or paste text, or switch to File and drop one file.
    2. Copy the MD5, SHA-1 or SHA-2 hash you need from the list.
    3. Paste the hash the site published into Expected hash to see if it matches.

    Questions

    What is a hash?

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of data. The same input always gives the same hash, and changing one character or byte gives a completely different one. Download sites publish hashes so you can confirm the file you received is the file they sent.

Are MD5 and SHA-1 safe to use?

For spotting a corrupted or incomplete download, yes: accidental damage almost never produces a matching hash. Do not rely on them for security, because attackers can build different files with the same MD5 or SHA-1 hash. Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 for anything security related.

    Are my files uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the file and computes the hashes itself. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Why can a very large file fail?

The whole file is loaded into browser memory before it is hashed. The rows show their progress, but very large files can still run out of memory on phones and small computers, and then a message says so. For a very large file, use a command-line tool such as sha256sum on your own computer.
