How to delete pages from a PDF without uploading it

By · · 4 min read

To delete pages from a PDF, mark the pages you do not want, check the page count, and save the rest as a new file. The original stays as it was. A tool that works in your browser does this on your own device, so the file is never sent to a server.

Why delete pages instead of printing around them

Most PDFs have a page or two that does not belong in the version you send: a blank page left by a scanner, a cover sheet nobody needs, an old draft at the back, or a page with a table the recipient should not see. Deleting that page from a copy is quicker than printing the rest again and scanning it, and every other page stays exactly as it was.

Deleting is the mirror of extracting pages. When you keep a few pages, it is easier to type the numbers you keep. When you drop a few, it is easier to type the numbers you drop. The tool shows the same page list either way, so you can work from whichever side is shorter.

Find the page positions first

The numbers in the tool are positions in the file. Page 1 is the first page of the file, whatever number is printed on it. A report with a printed cover is still page 1 in the file, so check the numbers in your viewer before you type anything.

The tiles show each page's shape. A landscape page looks wider than the portrait pages around it, and a page stored sideways shows its turned shape. That makes a wide table or a drawing easier to spot among text pages.

Mark the pages to delete

There are two ways to mark pages, and they stay in step:

  • Tap a tile to cross it out. A dashed tile with a cross and the word Delete means that page will be left out. Tap it again to keep the page.
  • Type numbers in the box, such as 2, 5-7. The grid updates as you type.

Numbers past the last page are left out, and the box says so. Zero is not a page, so it is left out too. If the box holds something the tool cannot read, a short message explains the problem and the download stays off until the box is valid.

Check the count before you save

The large line on the right shows the count before and after, such as 5 pages → 3 pages. Read it, then read the line beneath, which names the pages that will be left out. If every page is marked, the tool will not let you save an empty PDF. A PDF needs at least one page, so unmark one.

After you press Delete, a Download button appears. The file is named after the original with -edited added, so the copy you keep is easy to tell apart from the original.

What happens to the pages you keep

Kept pages are copied as they are. Each keeps its size, its rotation and its selectable text, so a landscape page stays landscape and a page stored sideways stays that way. The content is not redrawn.

Open the new file and look at the first and last pages before you send it. The tool keeps the pages in their original order, so a surprising result usually means a number was typed differently from what you meant. If you want the removed pages as a file of their own, split the PDF first and keep that part separately.

Deleting a page does not remove everything

Removing a page takes it out of the new file, and nothing more. Hidden text, comments, form fields and document properties such as the author or title can still be in the file, on the pages you keep. A black box drawn over text covers it on screen but leaves the text underneath. If something must not be readable, use a proper redaction method, as explained in why blur and boxes can fail.

Blank pages from a scanner

Scanners often produce pages that look empty but carry a faint mark, a shadow or a speck of dust. Before you delete a page that looks blank, zoom in on it in a viewer and check the margins. A page with only a signature or a short note in one corner is not blank, even when the rest of it is.

If a scanner adds a blank page at the back of every document, the position may repeat from file to file. Still check the count each time, rather than assuming the pattern holds.

Quick answers

Does deleting pages change the original file? No. The tool writes a new file and leaves the original alone. Keep the original until you have checked the new one.

Why is a page I meant to keep missing? The numbers in the box are page positions in the file. A printed page number can differ, especially after a cover. Check the positions in a viewer and mark again.

Can I delete every page? No. A PDF must keep at least one page. The tool shows zero pages left and does not allow the download.
