Measured refresh rate —Hz

Reading starts in a moment.

—average frame time
—median frame time

Measuring.

The reading is the median of the last 120 frames. A long frame took more than 1.5 times the median. A reading of 60 on a high-refresh screen can be a battery-saver cap, such as iPhone Low Power Mode.

Each bar is one frame. Bars in the warning colour ran long.

The tile crosses at a fixed speed, so jumps or stutter show late frames. It stays still when reduced motion is on.

How to check your screen refresh rate

  1. Leave this tab in front and wait a few seconds for the reading to settle.
  2. Read the big Hz figure and the nearest common rate beside it.
  3. Watch the frame graph and the motion strip. Tall bars and jerks are late frames.

Questions

Why does my screen show a lower rate than it is rated for?

Browsers can cap or slow animation frames in battery saver mode, in background tabs, or when a browser setting limits them. Screens with variable refresh, such as ProMotion or FreeSync, can also drop to a lower rate when the picture is still, so a reading taken while nothing moves may come out low. Move the mouse, then measure again.

Does this measure the monitor or the browser?

It measures the frames the browser actually delivers to this page. The panel’s rated refresh rate is set in your system’s display settings, and a browser can deliver fewer frames than the panel supports. The figure is what this page receives, not a hardware readout.

Why is the reading not exactly 60 or 144?

Frame timing jitters from one frame to the next. The test takes the median of the last 120 frames, which smooths most of that out, so the reading lands close to a common rate rather than on it exactly. If the figure is more than 4% from every common rate, no nearest rate is named.

Is anything recorded?

No. Frame timing is read in this tab and drawn on screen only. Nothing is stored or sent.
