How to test a game controller
- Press any button on the controller. Browsers show it only after a press.
- Press each button and watch it light up on the drawing and in the table.
- Move each stick to the edges and back, then leave it alone to check for drift.
Questions
Why does the controller not appear until I press a button?
Browsers report a controller only after a button press. This is a rule of the Gamepad API, which keeps pages from detecting controllers without a user action. Press any button once, keep this tab in front, and the controller appears.
What is stick drift?
Drift is when a released stick reads a value away from center. A little noise near center is normal. This page warns only when a resting stick reads more than 0.1 of its range for about a second, and the warning is a heuristic. Let go of the stick and check that it returns to center. A steady offset is the usual sign of drift, which is typically a worn sensor or potentiometer.
Why do the button names not match my controller?
Most controllers report the standard layout, which uses Xbox letters: A, B, X and Y. On a PlayStation pad the same positions are Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle. Some controllers report a non-standard mapping, so their buttons are numbered differently and the drawing may not match.
Why is the vibration test greyed out?
Only some controllers and browsers expose a vibration actuator to web pages. When the button is greyed out, this controller or browser does not offer vibration here.
