Questions

Which type should I use?

EAN-13 and UPC-A are the product codes on retail packaging; UPC-A is used mainly in North America, and EAN-8 is for small packs. Code 128 holds letters, digits and symbols and suits labels, shipping and stock. Code 39 is older and wider but read by almost every scanner.

Can I make up an EAN for a product I sell?

You can draw any number here, but numbers for retail products are issued by GS1 to the company that owns the brand, and shops check them. For your own stock, labels or events, use Code 128 with your own codes.

What is the check digit?

The last digit of an EAN or UPC is calculated from the others so a scanner can catch a misread. Type the digits without it and it is added; type all of them and the tool checks it.

Will it print sharply?

Use the SVG: it is made of exact rectangles and stays sharp at any size. For a PNG, pick a larger size before you download.
