Questions

How do I work out the fuel cost of a trip?

Multiply the litres used by the price per litre. 300 km at 6.5 L/100 km uses 300 × 6.5 ÷ 100 = 19.5 litres, and at 1.80 per litre that costs 35.10.

How do I convert MPG to litres per 100 km?

Divide 235.215 by the MPG figure for US gallons, or 282.481 for UK gallons. For example, 30 MPG (US) is about 7.84 L/100 km.

Why are UK and US MPG figures different?

A UK gallon is about 20% bigger than a US gallon, so the same car has a higher MPG figure in the UK measure. 30 MPG (US) is about 36 MPG (UK).

Does the round trip count both ways?

Yes. Ticking round trip doubles the distance before fuel and cost are worked out, so the total covers the return journey too.
