Questions

The level meter does not move. What now?

Check that the microphone in the list is the one you speak into, and that no mute switch or key is on. In your system sound settings, the input level must not be at zero. Then press Start microphone again.

Why does it say we hear silence?

The level stayed below −60 dBFS for three seconds. That is almost no signal, so the microphone is picking up nothing. It may be muted, the wrong input may be chosen, or the system may be blocking it.

Why do I hear an echo when I play the recording?

Echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain are switched off here, so you hear the raw input. If you play the clip through speakers, the microphone can pick it up again. Use headphones to avoid this. Video calls usually switch these features back on.

Does my recording leave the device?

No. The five-second clip is kept in this page’s memory only and is discarded when you close the tab. Nothing is uploaded.
