Labels follow a US ANSI layout. Other layouts print different letters, but each key’s code is its physical position. The numpad appears on screens 900 px and wider. Some system keys may never reach the page.

How to test a keyboard

  1. Click the box, then press each key on your keyboard.
  2. A key turns mint while held down and stays tinted once it has worked.
  3. Hold several keys together to see how many this page can read at once.

Questions

A key does not light up. Is it broken?

Click the box first, then press the key again. Some keys may never reach the browser. Brightness, volume and Fn keys on many laptops, and system shortcuts such as Win+L, are handled by the system first. A key that fails everywhere, including in other apps, is more likely a hardware fault.

What do ghosting and rollover mean?

Ghosting is when a keyboard drops a key press while several keys are held down. Rollover is how many key presses it can read at once. Browsers and systems can limit the count, so the figure here may be lower than your keyboard’s real rollover.

Why do the letters differ from my keyboard?

The labels follow a US layout. Other layouts print different letters on the same physical keys. Each key’s code describes its physical position, so the same key always lights the same square here.

Does the test record what I type?

No. The page reads which key went down or up and shows the last one. Nothing is stored or sent, and the keys you press do not go into any text box.
