What is lorem ipsum?
Placeholder text: Latin-looking words that show the shape of a page without being read. It is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC, with the words rearranged and altered.
Why does the text start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”?
That opening is the usual start of the standard passage, so it is what most people expect to see in a mock-up. Untick the box and the text begins with random sentences built from the same word list.
Is the generated text sent anywhere?
No. Your browser builds the text from a word list in the page, and nothing is uploaded. The settings you choose are remembered on this device only.
Can I leave placeholder text on a live page?
No. Visitors and search engines read whatever is on the page, so replace it with real copy before you publish. Placeholder text is for checking layout, line length and spacing.
