What lorem ipsum is, and how to use placeholder text well
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text: Latin-looking words that fill a page so you can judge its layout before the real writing exists. It is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC, with the words rearranged and altered. Designers and developers use it for mock-ups, templates and test pages. Use it to check how text will sit, then replace it before anything goes live.

Real copy carries meaning, and meaning pulls attention. A reviewer who reads a headline stops to judge whether it is right, and then forgets to look at the spacing around it. Placeholder text removes that distraction. Its words look like language, so the page has a believable texture, but nobody reads them for sense, so the review stays on the layout.
That is the whole job. Lorem ipsum does not test your message, your tone or your facts. It tests the shape of the page: how many lines a paragraph takes, whether a heading wraps awkwardly, whether a card grows taller than its neighbours, and whether the margins hold when the text is longer than you expected.
Where the text comes from
The standard passage is built from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The original Latin was rearranged and altered, so the result looks like a sentence in a language yet says nothing coherent. That is why it is useful. It reads as text, but no one would quote it.
Most generators, including this one, start from the same familiar opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit." That opening is what most people recognise, so it is also the easiest thing to spot if it is left on a page by mistake.
Paragraphs, sentences or words
Choose the unit that matches the question you are asking.
- Words when you are filling a short field, such as a title, a button label or a card summary. Ask for the number of words the real text will have.
- Sentences when you are checking a single block, such as an introduction or a caption.
- Paragraphs when you are checking a whole page, an article template or the spacing between paragraphs.
The generator builds sentences of six to fourteen words, capitalises them, and adds a comma in about one sentence in three. Paragraphs have four to seven sentences. Those ranges are chosen to look like ordinary prose at a glance, not to match any particular language.
The counts under the output are the numbers to watch when a design has limits. Word counts show how much of a layout the text fills. Character counts matter more for forms and social posts, because many limits count spaces and punctuation as characters too.
Plain text or HTML
Plain text suits a document, a design tool or a spreadsheet cell. HTML wraps each paragraph in a <p> tag, which is what a plain HTML page or a text field that accepts markup expects. Sentence and word output comes out as a single paragraph in either format.
If you paste HTML into a page template, check that the template styles paragraphs the way you expect. The tags do nothing on their own. The page's stylesheet gives them their spacing and line height, so a preview in the tool will not show every detail of the final page.
How to use it well
- Keep the placeholder close to the length of the real text. A ten-word headline filled with one long sentence tests the wrong thing.
- Test both extremes. Write a short version and a long version of the same block, and check that the layout still holds in each.
- Check at a phone width as well as a desktop width. Narrow screens expose line breaks that look fine on a wide one.
- Replace the text before publishing. Visitors read a page and search engines index it, so Latin left on a live page looks unfinished and can show up in search results.
Where it goes wrong
The usual failure is not the Latin. It is the leftovers. A page goes live with three paragraphs of placeholder under a real headline, and a visitor notices before the team does. Search the project for the opening words before you launch, and make that part of your release checklist.
The other failure is trusting placeholder that is too tidy. Generated paragraphs are close in length and rhythm, and real copy is not. Once the layout works with generated text, check it again with the first real draft, because the odd long word and the uneven paragraph are what usually break a grid.
Quick answers
Is lorem ipsum a real language?
No. It is Latin-shaped text made by rearranging and changing words from one classical source. It reads as language but carries no message.
Why not type random letters instead?
Random letters look like noise. Lorem ipsum has word lengths, spaces and punctuation that resemble prose, so the page keeps a believable texture while the reviewer looks at the layout.
Is the generated text sent to a server?
No. The generator runs in your browser and nothing you generate is uploaded. The settings you choose are remembered on this device only.
