Why a PDF page is sideways and how to fix it for good

· 4 min read

A PDF page that appears sideways usually has a rotation setting stored in the file, or the scan was made with the paper turned. Rotating the pages with a tool writes that setting into the file, so the page opens upright everywhere. Rotating only in a viewer may change just how the page looks on your screen, so the next person may still see it sideways.

Why scans come out sideways

  • The paper was placed on the scanner glass, or fed into a document feeder, in a different orientation from the one you expected.
  • A scanner or scanning app guessed the orientation automatically and guessed wrong. Auto-rotate works from the content, so pages with little text, a table or a diagram are the most likely to fail.
  • A phone photo of a page was taken in landscape while the page itself is portrait.

The rotation setting and the content

Each PDF page can carry a rotation setting of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Viewers apply that setting to the whole page, so a sideways scan with the setting turned to 90 degrees displays upright. Rotating the page with a tool changes this setting, and the picture data itself is left alone.

Some scans have the picture stored rotated inside the image. The page-level setting still turns the whole page, so the result is correct, but check it in a second viewer to be sure.

In the viewer or in the file

Most viewers let you rotate a page for the current session. That is useful for reading, but the change may disappear when you close the file, or it may be saved only if you choose to save. A rotation you want others to see has to be saved in the file. Rotate with the tool, save a new file and send that.

Steps

  1. Open the PDF and note which pages are sideways.
  2. Rotate only those pages, or all of them if the whole scan is turned.
  3. Save the result as a new file, so the original is still there.
  4. Open the new file in a second viewer, such as a browser, to confirm.

For a long scan with mixed orientations, scan with auto-rotate turned off, then fix only the pages that need it. That is a little more work at scan time, but it avoids guessing later.

Pages from a phone or a camera

A phone photo of a document keeps the orientation it was taken in, and a PDF made from that photo may come out sideways even though the paper was straight. Rotating the page fixes the file. Next time, take the photo in the orientation of the paper. For combining photos into one file, see how to turn phone photos into one PDF.

Mixed orientations in one file

A document can contain both portrait and landscape pages, such as a table on a wide sheet. Rotate only the pages that are wrong. Rotating the whole document would turn the correct pages sideways.

Why it matters beyond looks

A page in the wrong orientation is harder to read, print and check against the original. Rotating it in the file, instead of turning your screen or the paper each time, means everyone who opens the document sees the same thing.

Check printing

If the document is for a printer or a form, print one test page first. Printers and print dialogs have their own orientation settings, and matching the page orientation in the file to the orientation of the printed paper avoids surprises.

Scanner settings to check

Many scanners and scanning apps offer an automatic orientation option and a choice of portrait or landscape paper orientation. Automatic rotation is convenient for mixed batches, but it works best when each page has plenty of text. For a batch of similar forms, setting the orientation yourself is more reliable. Check a single test page before you scan the whole stack, so that a wrong setting does not multiply across dozens of pages.

Quick answers

Does rotating a PDF lower its quality? A rotation setting does not change the picture data, so rotating alone causes no quality loss.

Why does the file look upright on my computer but sideways for someone else? The rotation was probably applied only in your viewer and never saved to the file. Rotate with the tool and save.

Can I rotate just one page? Yes. Choose that page, rotate it and leave the other pages as they are.
